about

With geographical and musical borders quickly becoming a thing of the past, a new generation of hybrid artists take over. Chicago-born rapper Alo Wala is in the epicenter of this thriving transformation, forging a new path out of blog-centric music scenes such as Global Bass, hereby creating an entirely new paradigm. Alo Wala, born Shivani Ahlowalia, teams up with the colorful Danish crew Copia Doble Systema consisting of the production duo Julius Sylvest and Copyflex, as well as VJ Mad Es. Together they create a unique dancefloor experience combining South American rhythms and Indian sounds with galactic elements of hip-hop, dancehall and countless bass-driven genres. Alo Wala was first introduced to the world in a collaboration with MC Zulu and Nucleya called Little Lotto and now, this transnational outfit takes flight with the debut EP ‘Cityboy’ produced by Alo Wala, Julius Sylvest & Copyflex of Copia Doble Systema via Enchufada.

The EP opens with Badman Bible’smarching snares, calling all listeners to stand up and pay attention to the new players on the Global Club Music scene. Intricate raps voice messages of love over a rolling percussive instrumental created with NYC producer Boody, providing the perfect introduction to the Alo Wala’s unmistakeable sound. The momentum shifts to a slower tempo in the next song, Bend Yuh Backbone, which explores the band’s Indian connection, highlighting futuristic sitar riffs over syncopated beats and ravey chords. Arriving at the title track Cityboy, Alo Wala serves a dancehall-inspired tale of New York City life featuring a verse by renowned dancehall vocalist Jahdan Blakkamoore, who offers a classic Jamaican-style flow as an ideal counterpoint to Alo Wala’s entrancing and labyrinthine raps. Ace Of Space comes next and is inspired by one of Bollywood’s first rock & roll numbers, the anthem is blended into a synth-heavy dembow riddim. The EP ’s closer Timbuktu ramps up the energy with fast-paced Chicago juke beats and energetic vocals, made in collaboration with Italian producer The Clerk.

Alo Wala’s debut EP is robust and includes a music video for Cityboy directed by New York City aficionado Jamil GS, taking viewers on a journey through the streets of this magical city while proudly showcasing the skills of VJ MAD ES, who complements the clip with an hypnotic visual universe based on sacred geometry.
