It’s almost unbelievable when we think about the fact that Riot, the super-talented producer and musician who rose from being a local legend in the Portuguese drum&bass scene to co-founding the Global Club Music phenomenon known around the world as Buraka Som Sistema, has never released a proper solo EP.
After helping set the stage for a whole new musical revolution as Buraka Som Sistema took the Boiler Room by storm with a new sound that would be called Zouk Bass from that night on, a whole new chapter in Riot’s fruitful career started as he embraced the slower tempo of kizomba and made it his own. After this sound exploded worldwide the time is finally right for his highly-anticipated debut EP, in which the producer displays his unique take on syncopated 90BPM rhythms, blended with drum&bass breaks on a trip through the dark side of the force.
Enter the ‘Originator’ EP, where the artist claims his rightful place at the top of the zouk bass food chain and follows up on his Enchufada 2-track EP ‘Zouk Weapons Vol.1’ (still available as a name-your-price download). His debut solo EP shows us a slightly darker and more rugged approach to the sensual zouk rhythms while still leaving room for emotional appeal, as can be heard on the record opener Coming From My Heart, with its heartfelt vocal samples and entrancing synths. This bittersweet jam gives way to the crowd-hyping antics of guest MC Strategy (best known for his contribution to Dub Phizix’s hit Marka), who jumps on Riot’s high-octane 4AM to create an undeniable dancefloor anthem, setting the tone for the second half of the release with Bounce, which keeps the energy flowing with its thumping beat and electrifying synthwork before giving way to the EP closer Zouk In The Souk, an Arabian Nights-inspired dancefloor jam that finds perfect balance between rolling drum&bass breaks and the laid-back cadence of zouk beats, always with a hypnotizing melody hiding around the corner.
